Modern mobility: DLR-PT as a partner with overarching expertise

Teaser Text

Automated driving and networked systems enable modern mobility. Since 2019, the DLR Project Management Agency (DLR-PT) has been supporting a funding measure of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) to develop and test application-oriented research projects on innovative transport concepts.

18th October 2021 — Greenhouse gas emissions which harm the climate, pollution and, last but not least, noise and growing traffic areas – the ever-increasing traffic is a burden on people and the environment. At the same time, the currently available infrastructures are reaching their limits. The focus of the BMVI funding measure implemented by DLR -PT, “A future-oriented, sustainable mobility system through automated driving and networking”, is therefore on networked transport concepts that better link individual mobility and public transport. This is intended to enable modern, safe, environmentally friendly and affordable mobility in cities and especially in rural areas. DLR-PT accompanies and supports the current 26 large-scale collaborative projects involving municipalities, companies, universities and research institutions from all over Germany. The BMVI is making around 120 million euros available for the projects following two funding calls in 2019 and 2020.

Experienced DLR-PT staff from the specialist areas of traffic control, mobility, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and administrative and business management will help the project partners to implement their research projects. They are available as contact persons for all funding-related questions and contribute their expertise, among other things, to the constant monitoring of success. In addition, DLR-PT can draw on many years of experience and in-depth expertise from other contracts in which electromobility and transport play a major role. Currently, in addition to the BMVI measure mentioned above, the Energy and Mobility Department is implementing the ICT for Electromobility funding priority for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

Reallabor Hamburg – experiencing tomorrow's mobility today

At the ITS World Congress in Hamburg from the 11/10/ - 15/10/2021, experts showed what the future of mobility could look like and which concepts and findings are part of modern, sustainable mobility. Under the motto "Experience Future Mobility Now", around 400 exhibitors from more than 100 countries presented the latest trends from the fields of transport, logistics and digitalisation, making the modern, sustainable mobility of tomorrow tangible for today’s visitors. The exhibitors included the Reallabor Hamburg (RealLabHH), one of the projects being implemented as part of the BMVI funding measure.

The central goal of RealLabHH is to create recommendations for developing an environmentally and climate-friendly redesign of the mobility system. Until the end of 2021, in the here and now, the City of Hamburg is testing how ideas and possibilities for extensively networked mobility can actually be implemented and prove their worth in everyday life. The eleven research projects of the 30 project partners are thematically broadly positioned. They range from research into innovative mobility offerings from mobility platforms and autonomous driving to the use of micro-depots to reduce logistics traffic and on-demand shuttles. Hamburg citizens can actively participate in the projects and try out various offers themselves, such as the introduction of a mobility budget.

Expertise in the fields of energy and mobility at DLR-PT

Peter Wüstnienhaus, Head of the Energy and Mobility Department at DLR-PT, is convinced by the idea of mobility budgets. "With the help of an app that not only combines different means of transport, but also directly books the entire journey, individual transport needs could be optimally implemented," explains the engineer. "The future of mobility starts earlier than we think. As project promoters, we have to look four to five years into the future when designing appropriate funding measures." With the Energy and Mobility department from DLR-PT's Society, Innovation, Technology division, the project management organisation supports its clients with overarching expertise in environmental, energy and transport topics and works with them to define research priorities with a focus on electromobility and transport.
